Southampton v Swansea preview: Saints record their second win of the season

Southampton built on their 6-0 demolition of MK Dons in the Carling Cup with a 3-1 victory over an out-of-form Swansea City side.

Virgil Van Dijk scored his first goal for his new side before Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane sealed
the win for the Saints. Gylfi Sigurdsson netted an 83rd minute penalty for the visitors’ which was the only positive for Gary Monk.

The Dutch centre-back signed from Celtic thumped a header past Fabianski in the 11th minute. Serbian international Tadic attempted cross was deflected in by Ki Sung-Yeung, nine minutes after half-time to put the home side 2-0 up.

Just after the hour mark, Mane scored Saints’ third and secured all three points for Ronald Koeman’s team as they moved into the top half of the table.

This was Southampton’s second win of the season while the defeat for the Swans means they now have not won in three matches in the Premier League.

Graziano Pelle was rightly man of the match after his inspired performance in creating two goals for his team. First he showed technical ability with a sumptuous lofted pass to Tadic whose cross for Mane was deflected in by Ki Sung-Yeung.

The Italian’s shot was deflected by Swansea captain Ashley Williams into the path of Mane who duly scored his fourth goal of the season.

He also made 31 passes in the opponent’s half and he was the most creative outlet for his side.
Swansea were impressive at the start of the season. A 2-1 win over Manchester United at the Liberty stadium followed by a spirited 2-2 draw away to current champions Chelsea.

Garry Monk has some work to do as his team lacked an attacking threat. Bafetimbi Gomis was often left isolated in the final third. He was subbed at half-time for Eder after offering little in the way of a threat to the opposition’s goal.

Summer signing Andre Ayew spent most of the match in midfield rather than proving opportunities for Gomis and Eder.

Southampton face a tricky trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday and Jose Mourinho’s men will be buoyed as the came from two goals behind to claim a draw against Newcastle United.

Though they can take some positives going into this game as they have scored nine goals on the last two outings and Chelsea have been poor defensively this season.
