Chelsea v Southampton match preview: Can Southampton end their poor away form?

    By Will Taylor
Southampton’s opponents this weekend are an under-performing Chelsea side and the Saints should be full of confidence after last Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Swansea City.

Virgil Van Dijk scored his first goal since his move from Celtic in the summer and the team from the South Coast provided an impressive attacking display.

Dusan Tadic’s deflected shot made it 2-0 before Sadio Mane added further woes to Gary Monk’s side with his fourth goal of the season.

Ronald Koeman’s team have improved after their poor start to the campaign, which involved their first foray into Europe.

While Chelsea have registered, their worst league start in the Roman Abramovich era. Several of their big name players have been in poor form and that has resulted in Jose Mourinho saying this is the worst position he has been in during his prestigious career.

The Stamford Bridge outfit were defeated 2-1 by Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night to add to their woes. The loss in form of their talisman and captain John Terry has resulted in their Portuguese manager dropping him to the bench.

Branislav Ivanovic has been terrorised by wingers this season - and despite calls for him to withdrawn from the team. Mourinho has stuck by the Serbian.

His pursuit of Everton’s John Stones to replace Terry was the story of the summer but the Toffees held firm.
It looks like Chelsea could have done with the talented defender who some have said he is the future England captain.

Since admitting himself (Stones) wanted to move to Chelsea, he has performed well for Everton and Roberto Martinez.

Ronald Koeman can take confidence from his side’s last showing in the Premier League, which was only their second league win of the season.

    Diego Costa by cfcunofficial
Diego Costa serves the last of his three game ban after the former Atletico Madrid striker clashed with Arsenal’s Gabriel. Mourinho will have to choose from either Loic Remy or Radamel Falcao as Costa’s
    replacement.

Ryan Bertrand is in line to make his first start since his hamstring injury against his former club. Jordy Clasie returned to training this week and could make his first appearance in the Premier League.

Southampton have only won one of the last 13 meetings against this weekend’s opponents. The Saints are unbeaten away from home this campaign and they have not away from home in ten matches. Only Newcastle have a poorer record away from home.

Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has scored twice in two of his last three Premier League games against Chelsea.

The Blues have conceded 14 goals this season, one short of the total goals conceded in the whole of their 2004-05 campaign. Mourinho has never lost a game against Southampton and w

ill be hoping to capitalise on Southampton’s inconsistent form.

Chelsea despite their poor form will just have enough to win this game despite the loss of Diego Costa.

    Predicted result: Chelsea 2--0 Southampton
