    Klopp Watch - First Impressions

Many will agree that there isn’t such a thing as an ‘easy game’ in the Premier League. However, an away trip to Spurs is one of the harder games Mr Klopp will have to face this year. After being paraded in offices and schools as the savour of Liverpool FC, all eyes were on North London in anticipation.

Early blows were struck with Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge necessitating two changes. Tactically, Klopp opted for a traditional 4-2-3-1.

It was evident from kick off that this was a team playing under Klopp as Liverpool pressed high up the pitch. While Spurs occasionally made resulting mistakes, it was clear that the Reds were deprived of the quality necessary to punish their opponents.

While admirable, Liverpool failed to maintain this tempo throughout the full duration of the game. It was clear that Liverpool had not been conditioned to sustain this level of pressing as they looked lethargic in the dying moments of the game.

Statistics are able to confirm Klopp’s philosophy, as Liverpool was recorded as the first team to outrun Tottenham this season.

Klopp came to Anfield with a charismatic reputation. Typically animated and passionate on the side-line, this will be welcomed by Liverpool fans who had become accustomed to Brenden Rodgers’ gentle clapping in the technical area.

He also showed faith in this starting line-up as no changes were made until the final 10 minutes.

Liverpool fans should be encouraged by Klopp’s first performance as they looked solid in defence, a luxury that was absent in Rodgers’ final weeks.

From an attacking perspective, the players were pressing high and often won the ball back. The problem was the absent quality that is necessary in breaking down Premier League defences. Critics will be able to make an accurate judgement once Ings, Sturridge and Benteke return to the starting line-up.

Klopp will be encouraged by his side’s opening performance. Their effort cannot be questioned as each player worked tirelessly for the cause. Interest will be sparked once Klopp has his attacking resources returned.
