Manchester United vs PSV Eindhoven - Preview

Louis van Gaal’s men are back in European action in the week, with their home leg against Dutch side - and Memphis Depay’s former team - PSV Eindhoven.

The last time the two sides met, it was a sorry affair for the Red Devils. Not only did they lose their away tie back in September by two goals to one, they also had to kiss goodbye to their left-back Luke Shaw, whose leg was unfortunately broken in a clash with Hector Moreno. It is rumoured that PSV fans will unveil a flag with ‘Get well Luke Shaw’ written upon it - a touching gesture, if true.

But, Manchester United will be looking to settle their scores at home, and hoping to continue their good form of present. Manchester United have not conceded a goal from open play since they were thrashed at the Emirates, and their number one David de Gea will be looking to secure another clean sheet.

The key thing for the Reds now is to secure all three points from their clash, which won’t be easy, given the strength of the PSV side and their ever increasing injury list. Wayne Rooney is doubtful for the midweek clash, but there’s high hopes that Anthony Martial will return for duty.  The Frenchman picked up a bit of a knock on international duty at Wembley, in les Bleus first game after the tragic incidents that occurred in their capital city.

Ander Herrera is also doubtful for the clash, as he came off injured against Watford.

Manchester United will have to take full advantage of the fact PSV’s Andres Guardado is currently out injured. Guardado put one past them in their home tie, to secure all three points.

Juan Mata has been very vocal with his thoughts on the situation. He is seeking a win at home tonight, in order to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. He also has his eye on Saturday’s game away to Leicester City - where United lost 5-2 last season - in order to take the top spot in the Premier League.

No doubt there will be tributes to one of Manchester United’s greatest number 7’s George Best tonight. The 25th of November marks ten years from his tragic death.
