Southampton extend their unbeaten run to six matches in the Premier League as Sunderland defensive problems continue. Match Report.

Southampton remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Sunderland.

The Saints controlled the first half and had the better chances to take the lead but were thwarted as Jose Fonte and Steve Davis had efforts cleared off the line.

Southampton’s dominance finally took its toll as Yann M’Vila fouled Ryan Bertrand in the penalty area and Dusan Tadic stepped up to score his fourth goal of the season.

Sunderland provided very little in the way of attacking threat as Sam Allardyce changed to a narrow 4-4-2 formation after the 6-2 hammering by Everton last weekend,

The hosts failed to break through the resilient Southampton defence and the former Newcastle United manager will have to find a solution by where his team create chances going forward whilst remaining tight at the other end.

Ronald Koeman’s side have collected two consecutive clean sheets in a row and summer signing Virgil Van Dijk has been a key component of the Saints defence.

Sunderland have the worst defensive record in the Premier League as the Black Cats have conceded 26 goals in the 2015/16 campaign,

Sam Allardyce was frustrated that his team’s penalty claim was not given after a Maya Yoshida handball but it would have been harsh penalty, as Southampton deserved the victory.

Ronald Koeman likes a fluid passing style and his team followed his philosophy as they produced 555 passes as they controlled the game.

    Jordy Clasie
Costel Pantillimon kept the score goal less at half time with key saves from Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic.

Jordy Clasie was rightly given the man of the match award as he started many of Southampton’s attacks and he completed 88 % of his passes.

After the match, Sam Allardyce recognised his side are playing with fear and he will need to inspire his troops to avoid relegation this season.

Jermaine Defoe and Steven Fletcher have scored four and three goals respectively for their team respectively and Sunderland will have to other members of the squad weighing with goals to ease the pressure on their strikers.

Southampton are a good team and they are showing it consistently at the moment, maybe not competing in Europe has had a positive effect on the Saints.

If they want to challenge for the top six, then they will have to keep hold of their best players and improve on their squad if they are to challenge the higher echelons of the Premier League.

International friendlies are taking place after this weekend’s fixtures, when the top flight of England returns Southampton face Stoke at St Mary’s. While Sunderland must reflect for two weeks as they travel to Crystal Palace.
