Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton. Match Report.

Southampton’s are without a win in four games as they slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Crystal Palace.

In the 38th minute, Yohan Cabaye swept in Yannick Bolasie’s cross past Paulo Gazzaniga in the Saints' goal.

The Eagles dominated the game from start to finish as Alan Pardew oversaw Crystal Palace’s first win over Southampton in the top flight.

Wayne Hennessey thwarted Saints’ Shane Long as the visitors’ pushed for an unjustified equaliser. The Welshman dived low to save the Republic of Ireland striker's effort.

However, that was not the only stunning save the former Wolves keeper made. He produced an acrobatic save from the same player to keep the score goalless.

Bolasie, who was valued at £40 million by manager Pardew, changed the game for Crystal Palace.

The DR Congo outmuscled Jose Fonte to cross for Cabaye to open the scoring. His pace and power was a constant thorn as he bullied the Southampton defence.

The former Newcastle boss, who had previously had Cabaye under his leadership at St James’ Park, told BBC Sport: "Our wide players were terrific, but the difference between the two sides was a masterclass in midfield from Cabaye. He showed every reason why we spent the pennies to bring him here.

"This is a good team. I am very proud to be manager of it and they worked very hard for it. The scoreline says it was a 1-0 but it was more than that - the two keepers had to be brilliant."

Ronald Koeman decided to start with Paulo Gazzaniga in goal instead of Marten Stekelenburg and that decision proved a wise one. The Italian made three vital saves in quick succession.

He denied Bolasie’s attempted shot, which was heading for the top corner. The stand-in keeper also saved close range attempts by Yohan Cabaye and Connor Wickham.

The Dutchman said he was disappointed with the result, but he believes there is reason of optimism: "Maybe we lack a bit of confidence, but the boys showed good character. It's now four or five games where we don't win. I'm a little bit worried about that but not worried about the spirit, “he told Southampton’s official website.

Former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino will return to St Mary’s with his in-form Tottenham side. Whilst Palace visit Stoke at the Potteries.
