Newcastle United vs Liverpool Preview. Can Newcastle overcome Liverpool yet again in front of the Toon Army faithful?

Newcastle United must keep up Liverpool’s St James’ Park frustrations if they are to make a good start to their difficult Christmas fixture list.

In the month of December, Newcastle must take on the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton as they look to escape yet another relegation scrap.

This weekend the Magpies take on the red half of Merseyside, who have flourished under new manager Jurgen Klopp, for a contest which has produced some memorable games over the years.

The history books may back Liverpool as the more dominant team in this fixture, but the Reds have not had it all their own way when they have travelled to the North East in recent years.

Last season Ayoze Perez found the back of the net to award Newcastle all three points in a hard fought 1-0 win.

The season before that, Liverpool needed to come from behind twice to snatch a point against their tenacious Tyneside opponents.

However the season prior to that 2-2 draw, Liverpool had much better fortunes, as they hammered a Newcastle side who finished the game with 10 players by six goals to nil.

But this emphatic win came after back-to-back St James’ Park victories for the Toon Army across the two previous seasons, meaning the Magpies have won three of their last five home fixtures against the Reds.

As positive as this is for Newcastle fans to read, the past remains in the past and the future is still yet to be written and Klopp’s team have been in emphatic form.

The team travelling to the North East have not lost on the road under their German head coach and have bagged a mighty 10 goals in their last two away fixtures against Manchester City and Southampton.

Meanwhile Newcastle have conceded eight goals in their last two Premier League games, while only scoring one goal for themselves during that time.

Rob Elliot is the man Steve McClaren will likely call upon in goal to keep Liverpool at bay, however Elliot was the man between the posts for the Magpies on the day they conceded six to the Reds.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper will have to be at his best, as he has an injury crisis in front of him with four senior defenders carrying knocks.

Massadio Haidara and Steven Taylor will remain unavailable until the new year, while Jamaal Lascelles and the recently recalled Mike Williamson are doubts with hamstring injuries.

Newcastle’s injury problems get worse elsewhere in the team, as Gabriel Obertan, Rolando Aarons, Cheick Tiote and Emmanuel Riviere are all set to miss out as well.

As for Liverpool, they will be without Joe Gomez and Danny Ings for this contest and for the rest of the season.

Kolo Toure and Phillipe Coutinho could both return from their injuries for the trip to St James’ Park but defensive duo Jon Flanagan and Mamadou Sakho are both unlikely to feature.

The Reds will also be without Emre Can, who is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season during Liverpool’s 6-1 cup win over Southampton in midweek.

Klopp’s players will go into this game licking their lips at the prospect of grabbing yet another high scoring win over a struggling Newcastle side.

But the Premier League is full of surprises, and on a weekend in which Stoke claimed victory over Manchester City and minnows Bournemouth overcame champions Chelsea, who is to say another upset isn’t on the cards.

Score Prediction: Newcastle United 1:1 Liverpool
