    Southampton 4-0 Arsenal. Southampton dent Arsenal's title chances.

    Tis the season for goodwill and Southampton were one of the recipients at they beat Arsenal 4-0 at the St Mary’s stadium.
    Saints right back Cuco Martina, replaced Cedric and he repaid Ronald Koeman’s faith as his curling shot from 30 yards beat Petr Cech in the Arsenal goal.

     The Man of the Match Shane Long doubled the lead 10 minutes after half time. Club captain Jose Fonte put the game to bed with a header from a corner.
    The Republic of Ireland striker scored his second goal of the game to give Southampton fans a Boxing Day gift.

     Prior to this match, the Saints had not won in six Premier League matches: “You don't expect a 4-0 win against Arsenal. Of course, we have a good football team, but we have struggled in recent weeks. Koeman told the Club’s official website.
    “But the second half was perfect. It was a tough night for Arsenal; we caused them a lot of problems. It was an amazing result.”

    With this victory Southampton consolidate their position of twelfth and will hope this result will boost Ronald Koeman’s hopes of qualifying for Europe.

    Arsenal were unbeaten in 11 matches before arriving on the South Coast, had their won they could have been top of the league: "We lost too many challenges and that explains why we lost the game. However, that's one aspect, so well done to them.

    The 4-0 score line flattered Arsenal somewhat as their opponents should have scored more. Virgil Van Dijk had a header ruled out for offside and Dusan Tadic’s goal bound attempt was palmed away by Cech:  "The second aspect is that on the first three goals we were really unlucky with the decision of the referee.

    "The first goal was offside, the second goal was a foul, and the third goal was a goal kick, so if you're a bit below par and on top of that you have the first three goals against you in the decision-making then it's even more difficult." Wenger told BBC Sport.

    Victor Wanyama dominated kept Arsenal’s midfield quiet as the Kenyan made six tackles and 10 key interceptions.

    Southampton travel to West Ham and Arsenal face Bournemouth at the Emirates.

    This was Arsenal’s heaviest defeat since the 6-0 drubbing by Chelsea in 2014.

    Shane Long has scored five and assisted two more goals in his last seven Premier League starts for Southampton.
