Watford 3-0 Liverpool: Ighalo double sinks Reds

    By Alex Easley
Watford captain Troy Deeney celebrates with strike partner Odion Ighalo.
Odion Ighalo scored two as Watford cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Sunday afternoon.

Nathan Ake tapped the ball home after an Adam Bogdan error to open the scoring with just three minutes gone, before Ighalo doubled the lead twelve minutes later.

The Nigerian forward then scored the host’s third after heading in Valon Behrami’s terrific cross, leaving Quique Sanchez Flores’ side just a single point off the top four.

Liverpool, however, are now without a win in December and remain just five points behind 4th placed Tottenham.

With three minutes on the clock, a swinging corner came into the box and seemed easy for the debuting Bogdan to take, but he dropped the ball into Ake’s path, who tapped in his first ever Premier League goal.

Replays showed, though, that Bogdan had both hands on the ball at the time of Ake’s strike and he appeared to have ‘full control’ of it.
Nathan Ake scored his first Premier League goal after Adam Bogdan's howler just three minutes into the game.
The Hornets then made it 2-0 when captain Troy Deeney played a sublime pass through to Ighalo, who held off Martin Skrtel to fire his 27th league goal of 2015 past Bogdan into the bottom-right corner of the net.

The visitor’s problems got worse as Skrtel was forced off with an injury, Jurgen Klopp chose to bring on forward Divock Origi as his replacement.

The change saw Liverpool’s performance improve as moments into the second half, Origi’s touch set up Adam Lallana in the box, but what seemed a certain goal was superbly blocked by Craig Cathcart.

Mamadou Sakho slipped to give Ighalo a one-on-one chance with Bogdan, but the Hungarian keeper saved well to keep the score at 2-0 and tipped the ball out over the bar.

Liverpool almost reduced the deficit moments after that Ighalo miss through midfielder Jordan Henderson, but his strike was tipped over by the ever acrobatic Heurelho Gomes, who was determined to keep a second successive clean sheet.

Watford punished Liverpool’s toothless attacks when Deeney fed the ball through to substitute Behrami, who delivered a great ball onto the head of Ighalo for his 12th goal of the season, completing an excellent victory for Flores’ team.

The win means Watford have won four top-flight matches in a row for the first time since April 1987, and keeps them in seventh, but just one point behind Tottenham and Manchester United.

Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores did not want to get too carried away after the win and says the focus still remains on Premier League safety.

"Our target is to stay in the category (Premier League). It's very important for Watford that we continue growing. I am focused completely on this target.

"Of course, the people, the players and everyone can dream - because the dream is very free.”
