Premier League Best XI - 12-13th Jan - Midweek Madness!!

As the games continue to come thick and fast in the Premier League there was a full set of midweek fixtures providing a few surprises and a hat-full of spectacular goals from Roberto Firmino, Wayne Rooney and Paul Dummett among others. Here is the Best XI from this round of games:

Tim Howard (GK) - The Everton keeper was in inspired form to keep out Manchester City on Wednesday night making 5 saves and keeping one of the few clean sheets of the gameweek.

Joleon Lescott (Def) - The Aston Villa defender not only kept a rare clean sheet but he earned his side a victory for the first time since the opening day of the season with the only goal of the game as Villa beat Crystal Palace.

Robert Huth (Def) - Leicester held out Tottenham on Wednesday night at White Hart Lane thanks to a brilliant defensive display from Huth and they snatched a very late winner thanks to this mans powerful header that flew into the top corner.

Matt Targett (Def) - Southampton have been in very dodgy form recently but seem to have steadied the ship which was encapsulated by their very comfortable 2-0 win over Watford. Matt Targett not only kept a clean sheet but he provided the assist for Shane Long's opener.

Christian Fuchs (Def) - Another Leicester defender in the team of the week thanks to his corner being the one Huth got his head to in the dying moments of the game. He also put a great shift in keeping a high-flying Tottenham side quiet.

Patrick Van Aanholt (Def) - Sunderland were involved in one of the most entertaining games of the season as they led 1-0, trailed 2-1 and eventually ran out 4-2 winners. The full-back was a crucial part of this providing an assist and also getting himself on the scoresheet.

Roberto Firmino (Mid) - It has taken a while for Firmino to settle into the Premier League but Wednseday night saw him open the scoring and then score a screamer to put Liverpool into the lead twice at home to Arsenal. The Brazilian showed he could still he a wise investment.

Ibrahim Afellay (Mid) - Stoke City carried on their very good form with another home win, this time against Norwich. Afellay provided 2 of the assists in the game that finished 3-1 to the Potters.

Jermain Defoe (ST) - The Hat-Trick hero of the night could have put his name into the mind of Roy Hodgson with his excellent display, dragging Sunderland through, he is going to be vital if Sunderland are to survive this season.

Wayne Rooney (ST) - The England and Manchester United captain has been missing all season but Tuesday saw him back to his old self as he confidently dispatched a penalty, assisted Lingard for the second and then scored the goal of the night for his second and United's third. However his efforts fell short as Newcastle drew level at 3-3 in the closing minutes.

Enner Valencia (ST) - One of West Ham's best players who has been injured all season is now back and firing. He scored two as West Ham comfortably beat Bournemouth who recently spent £10m on a new striker. With Valencia and Payet back West Ham are a force to be reckoned with, like in days gone by.

The games continue to come as the next gameweek is this weekend where it is the return of the biggest rivalry in English football, Liverpool v Manchester United.
