Liverpool FC defender under investigation after failing a drug's test

    By Carl Halsall

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is under investigation from UEFA after a possible anti-doping rule violation.

Sakho has reportedly tested positive with use of a 'fat burner' supplement in order to help him lose additional weight, and it is thought that Sakho will more than likely ask for a B sample to be tested.

Sakho is currently not subject to any player suspension. However, the club has spoken to the player, and have decided that whilst the investigation continues he will not be available for match selection.

Sakho was tested after Liverpool's 1-1 draw in the Europa League last 16 2nd leg tie against Manchester United.

The France international was in the stands at Anfield on Saturday to watch Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, after being 2-0 ahead at half-time.

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has not said much on the subject, but was asked about it after the 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

"I'm really limited to what I can say," said Klopp. "There's an official statement, and there's nothing else to say.

"It's not the most easy situation that's for sure, but maybe we can say more when we know more maybe next week. "

A UEFA statement on the matter read: "UEFA would like to confirm the information communicated by Liverpool FC regarding an adverse finding in a doping test of their player Mamadou Sakho conducted at the UEFA Europa League match between Manchester United FC, and Liverpool FC on 17 March 2016."

UEFA also stated: "There are no disciplinary proceedings opened at this stage."

Liverpool have chosen to exclude him from match selection, and it is evidently a player issue, and is not a charge against the club.

The news has come at a crucial stage in Liverpool's season, with the Europa League Semi final against Villareal being played over the next 2 weeks with the first leg at El Madrigal in Spain first, and with key players such as, Divock Origi, and Emre Can out injured, Liverpool could really do with the in-form Sakho over the coming weeks.

Sakho is vast becoming a fan favourite at Anfield with a number of excellent performances during the course of the season, and everyone involved with the club will want this matter put to bed as soon as possible.

Sakho has until Tuesday 26 April 2016 to respond to the findings of the test.
