West Brom 0-1 Watford: Heurelho Gomes heroics as Ben Watson scores the winner

    By Alex Easley
Heurelho Gomes saved two penalties for Watford to help win all three points at West Brom.
Heurelho Gomes saved two Saido Berahino penalties as Watford ended a six-match wait for a Premier League victory as they beat West Brom 1-0 at the Hawthorns.

The Brazilian shot stopper proved a tough task to get through as Berahino was thwarted from 12 yards on 68 minutes and again with three minutes remaining.

The game lacked chances, but Ben Watson produced the only moment of real quality, turning in Adlene Guedioura’s corner past Ben Foster with 27 minutes gone.

Despite conceding two penalties, Watford held on for the three points that has seen them break through the 40-point mark in the Premier League and also move above the Baggies in the table.

Albion boss Tony Pulis recalled Claudio Yacob into the starting line-up, while Quique Sanchez Flores made four changes before next week’s FA Cup semi-final with Crystal Palace.

Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Nathan Ake and Guedioura were all brought back in the visitor’s eleven after missing the draw with Everton.

It was the Hornets who made the brighter start, with Guedioura drilling a low strike wide on 17 minutes.

West Brom took their time to get going and didn’t really test Gomes until 24 minutes, when Stephane Sessegnon’s free-kick was tipped away by the Watford goalkeeper.

Jose Jurado then stung the hands of Ben Foster with a long-range shot but the former England man was breached just shortly after.

Watson, who was actually on loan at West Brom briefly six years ago, got away from James McClean to meet Guedioura’s corner at the near post and glanced an effort across the goal and into the net via the woodwork.

It could have been two seven minutes later, but Ake’s attempt was rash, failing to capitalise on the build-up play from Troy Deeney and Jurado.

The hosts then had two chances to equalise before the half-time break, but Berahino sliced a shot wide on 40 minutes before Sessegnon’s strike went just moments later.

Gareth McAuley called Gomes into action seven minutes after the break as West Brom, with Pulis' half-time team-talk no doubt ringing in their ears, tried to find a route back into the game.

Watford, however, weathered the storm and could have doubled their lead, only for Forster to produce a fine save to deny Deeney's goal-bound effort on 57 minutes.

The hosts struggled to create anything worthwhile from that point on, but they were handed a lifeline when Gomes brought Berahino down with a rash challenge on 67 minutes.

The big Brazilian, however, atoned for his misjudgment, leaping to his right to keep Berahino's poor spot-kick out a minute later.

That seemed to spell the end of Albion's hopes as the game petered out. But referee Michael Oliver's decision to penalise Etienne Capoue for a foul on Sessegnon breathed life into their chances.

Berahino, looking to atone for his earlier miss, was denied again by Gomes who tipped the striker's effort wide as the Hornets left victorious.
