Liverpool confirm signing of new goalkeeper

    By Carl Halsall

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of German goalkeeper Loris Karius from German Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05, in a reported £4.7 million five-year deal.

Karius, 22, expressed his delight in signing for Liverpool on Liverpoolfc.com saying: "It's a very good feeling, and it's an honour to play for a club like this.

"They have a special history, and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield."

He went on to say that he knew a lot about the club's history, and that manager Jurgen Klopp told him is future plans for the club.

"I know a lot about the club from watching them on TV. The history, everybody who plays football knows.

"I spoke to the manager, and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players."

After making 34 Bundesliga appearances last season, and keeping a total of nine clean sheets in the process to help his former club Mainz finish 6th in the Bundesliga.

The 22-year-old was also a part of Manchester City's youth academy for two years before returning to Germany in 2011, will most certainly provide strong, and much needed competition for current first choice keeper Simon Mignolet, who has not had much competition for his place since arriving from Sunderland three years ago.

Stats and Key Figures from the 2015-2016 season between Karius and Mignolet:

    • Karius successfully dealt with 99% of balls in the air that he went for, compared to the 89% effort from Mignolet.

    • Karius only conceded 3 goals from corners, and did not concede any from free kicks. Mignolet conceded 8 from corners.

    • Overall Karius conceded 42 goals, and made 87 saves. Mignolet also conceded 42 goals, but only made 54 saves.

    • Karius had a 60% pass completion rate, whilst Mignolet had a better rate at 66%.

These stats would suggest that Karius is an upgrade, and will provide good competition for Mignolet, however stats might not be relevant come the new season.

Jurgen Klopp also expressed his delight in the signing; "I am delighted we have signed Loris, he has had a fantastic season with Mainz and has developed into a very good goalkeeper since his return to Germany, " Klopp said.

"I am really pleased that we were able to move so quickly to get him and that Loris has shown such a desire to come to Liverpool with a lot of other clubs interested in him."

Karius could potentially be participating in the Olympic Games in Rio for Germany, so there is a possibility he could miss the first few games for Liverpool in the new season.

He has targeted the number 1 spot at Anfield, and has said he will not settle for a place on the substitutes bench.

He said; "If I thought I was just going to sit on the bench, I wouldn't have made the move."

Karius becomes Liverpool's 2nd summer signing alongside defender Joel Matip from German side FC Schalke 04.
