Moyes Returns to Premier League with Sunderland

David Moyes has been appointed Sunderland manager on a four year deal, after previous incumbent Sam Allardyce was confirmed as England manager the day before.

Moyes becomes the fourth Sunderland Manager in three years

He is currently fourth on the all time list of most Premier League games managed so Sunderland could hardly have hired a more experienced replacement. Sunderland Chairman Ellis Short is delighted, have recognised that they have tried to bring in Moyes on a number of previous occasions without success, and he is now delighted to have finally got his man.

Moyes has been out of work since he was sacked by Real Sociedad in November, after a year in charge of the Spanish club. He has not been in the Premier League since being sacked by Manchester United after a disastrous 10 month spell in charge in April 2014.

He took over from Sir Alex Ferguson on a six year contract but was sacked with Manchester United seventh in the table and out of all domestic and European competitions. However his record at Everton is incredibly strong, given the limited resources he had to work with. He led them to nine finishes inside the Top 7 of the Premier League, including one Top 4 finish. He also led Everton to the Final of the 2009 FA Cup but finished as a runner up to Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea.

Since leaving Spain, Moyes has been linked with various jobs including Newcastle United, Swansea, Celtic and Aston Villa, even interviewing for the Villa job after their relegation. He is now tasked with continuing the good work started by Sam Allardyce at Sunderland, and fans will be hoping he can bring the long term stability he brought to Everton as he is their fourth manager in three years.

Moyes has little time on his hands to improve a Sunderland squad that survived by the skin of their teeth in 17th place last season. He will watch his new players today for the first time during their friendly match with Rotherham, before flying out to France this weekend to continue preseason preparations.
