Who is Liverpool's Next Wonderkid Ben Woodburn?

Although we are barely a week into preseason, a new name has emerged on Merseyside and there are tentative whispers that young Ben Woodburn could be the next young star to break through at Anfield.

Woodburn puts Liverpool two goals up against Wigan

The 16 year old Welsh forward had only made the move into the Liverpool Under-18 squad at the turn of the year, and he was only 15 at the time. However he marked the occasion by scoring a fantastic solo goal and followed that up with a brace against arch rivals Manchester United, one of which was a stunning overhead kick.

Woodburn has since appeared in both of Liverpool's preseason appearances so far, producing a fantastic performance in both games. He bagged a goal and two assists in Liverpool's 5-0 demolition of Fleetwood Town and bagged another goal in their latest victory over Wigan. In both games the young man has looked assured and confident, completely belying his teenage years.

There is a genuine buzz around Anfield about the current Welsh Under-17 captain, and he has drawn comparisons with a young Aaron Ramsey who himself broke into the game at an exceptionally young age at Cardiff City.

Klopp has already alluded that Woodburn may be too young to force his way into the rest of his preseason plans. When asked after the Wigan match if Woodburn would figure in his plans this season he said, "Of course not, Ben is only 16. Of course not". Still, being part of Liverpool's Under-21 squad at just 16 is pretty special.

Liverpool Under-16 coach Des Maher gave a glowing review of Woodburn, saying "I've worked with Ben for the past two years, he comes in everyday and gives it everything he's got. I believe he is destined to make big steps in the game".

Liverpool fans can take hope that Jurgen Klopp has continually looked to youth to supplement his squads during his time in Germany and his first 9 months at Liverpool. Don't expect to see too much more of Woodburn this season, Liverpool's lack of European football means squad rotation will be kept to a minimum, but this is definitely one to watch for the future.
