Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City Preview: Pochettino and Gaurdiola meet for first time in England

    By Alex Easley
Heung-Min Son and Tottenham go into Sunday's game with Man City on the back of four straight wins.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino could have four first-teamers back for Sunday’s top of the table match against Manchester City at White Hart Lane.

Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose will all be assessed ahead of the game as they near returns to action, while Moussa Sissoko could also feature following a concussion last weekend.

Pochettino’s first ever win in management came when Espanyol beat Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona at the Nou Camp in 2009, and the Argentine will be hoping to inflict a first defeat on the Spaniard’s City side this season.

Guardiola’s reign began with 10 straight victories, and that run was ended by Celtic with a 3-3 draw in Champions League in midweek.

The Manchester City boss said: "I think he's one of the best managers in the world - I enjoy watching Tottenham.

"He's doing an amazing job... the way they play I like a lot - they're aggressive and have a lot of quality.

"They're proactive, not reactive. There are many teams who wait to see what you do and then react - they [Spurs] don't wait to see what they're going to do. They want to create their own game. That's why I like them."
Pep Guardiola says Mauricio Pochettino is one of the best managers in the world.
Spurs, meanwhile, have made their best start to a season for 51 years, following an unbeaten league run which has seen them win three and drawn two while only conceding three goals so far.

Mauricio Pochettino said on his opponents:  "Maybe we are a little behind them but our expectation in the long term is to compete with all the big clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool.

"We are building a new stadium, we have an unbelievable training ground and we want to set the principles to be a big, big club. Our spirit and ambition is to be one of the biggest in the world, but you need time and a normal process.

"It is difficult to compare Tottenham and Manchester City. You look at their budget, the salaries they pay and compare it with Tottenham, and it is very clear... we have very different projects."

Tottenham striker Harry Kane remains out with an ankle injury, meaning summer signing Vincent Janssen is likely to start again up front.

Guardiola has reported that there are no new injury worries for City's trip to north London.
The club are still assessing the extent of the injuries afflicting Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany and Fabian Delph in order to determine how long they will remain on the sidelines.

The Belgians are receiving treatment for hamstring and groin problems respectively, but it is hoped Delph's muscle injury will clear up by the end of the international break. Nolito will be suspended, following his red card at Bournemouth.
Eric Dier (middle), who scored is the same fixture last season, could return for Spurs on Sunday.

Tottenham won both of last season's Premier League meetings with Manchester City, having lost eight of their previous nine against them.

There have been 22 goals scored in the last five Premier League encounters between these sides at White Hart Lane (nine for Spurs, 13 for City).

Spurs have won 22 of their 38 Premier League games against City; should they win this match, they will have beaten them more often than they've defeated any other Premier League side (they have also beaten Everton 22 times).

    Tottenham Hotspur

Victory would give Spurs their second-best start to a top-flight season, bettered only by their title-winning 1960-61 campaign.

Tottenham have the best defensive record in the division, conceding three goals. They have yet to concede a league goal from open play at White Hart Lane.

Son Heung-min has scored five goals in five games for Spurs in all competitions this season, as many as he did in his last 37 games of the 2015-16 campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino's first match as a head coach was against Pep Guardiola - he led Espanyol to a 0-0 draw against Barcelona in a Copa del Rey tie on 21 January 2009.

A month later, Pochettino claimed his first ever win by guiding Espanyol to a 2-1 league victory against Guardiola's Barca at the Camp Nou on 21 February.

However, that is Pochettino's only win in nine meetings with Guardiola as a coach (D3, L5).

    Manchester City

Pep Guardiola could become the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches. He is currently tied with Carlo Ancelotti, who won his first six games with Chelsea in 2009.

The only team to win their opening seven Premier League fixtures was Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in 2005-06.

They started with nine successive wins on the way to winning the title.

The only time City have begun a league season with seven successive wins was in 1897-98, in the second tier.

Sergio Aguero has scored 28 goals in his last 27 Premier League appearances.

Aguero averages a league goal every 106 minutes in England - the best record in Premier League history, ahead of Thierry Henry (121 minutes).
