    Aguero brace sends City top

Aguero celebrates giving City the lead with his second goal of the afternoon.

Sergio Aguero scored a brace and became the joint top scorer in the league as Manchester City came from behind at Turf Moor to secure a hard-earned victory as they temporarily move to the top of the Premier League.

Burnley took the lead in the 14th minute through a crisply struck volley from 25 yards from the right foot of midfielder Dean Marney – who scored his first Premier League goal in seven years as City failed to clear the ball after a long kick forward by returning goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

But City fought back strongly, and had a flurry of chances before Aguero eventually fired in from close range 10 minutes before the interval.

Aguero – who before today had never scored against Burnley in the Premier League, netted his second after a huge defensive mix-up from Burnley on the hour mark to take his Premier League tally into double figures this season.

Burnley pushed desperately for an equaliser and nearly got it late on through Ashley Barnes but Claudio Bravo saved comfortably as City held on to claim all three points.

The result puts Manchester City at the top of the league, as they secured back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time since September.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche will be extremely concerned following the match as influential midfielders Dean Marney and Johann Berg Gudmundsson both went off injured in the first half, with counterpart Pep Guardiola also looking considerably distressed after Englishman Raheem Sterling hobbled off.

You could barely hear yourself talk as the players emerged from the tunnel at an electric Turf Moor on what was a sunny but cold afternoon. The game started slowly, with both sides not creating much in terms of chances but was sparked into life in the eighth minute as Jeff Hendrick seemed to be barged to the ground by Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi as a free kick was floated into the box – but the appeals were waved away by referee Andre Marriner.

City almost took the lead after Aguero let fly from 25 yards, but Robinson was equal to it as he got down smartly to push away the ball. Bravo had to be at his best to keep out Gudmundsson as Burnley were beginning to be on the front foot.

The goal finally came as Robinson floated a free kick into City’s 18-yard box, which was only partially cleared and fell straight to Dean Marney, who didn’t need a second invitation to firmly volley the ball into the bottom left hand corner beyond a sprawling Bravo.

The goal was a wakeup call for City, who began to move the ball around more swiftly in the final third. Robinson was called into action again from Nolito but he held on to the shot confidently.

However, there was nothing Robinson could do when City netted the leveller, as a low corner from the right-hand side was flicked on and went through a crowd of players to the back post where Aguero had a simple finish from two yards.

City emerged from the break with a spring in their step, and took the lead for the first time in the game when hot in form Argentinian Aguero found the net again in the 60th minute to claim his 27th Premier League goal this year in what was a huge defensive mix up for Burnley with two defenders going to clear the ball which resulted in Fernandinho firing the ball across the six-yard box onto the shins of Aguero and into the net.

Burnley began to press for the goal and had a few half chances towards the end as they tested the City backline with some teasing deliveries into the box, but City stayed firm and held on for the victory to claim their sixth away win out of seven this season in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola was full of praises for his talismanic forward Aguero.

"He had a really good game. From the beginning he was ready, his body language was very good."

City showed their ability to grind out a result in tough circumstances, with Fernandinho stating that "to be a champion" City must be able to play and secure results in games like these.

City host Chelsea next weekend in a mammoth top of the table clash at the Etihad.
