Consistency will be key for all the Top 5 teams

The last international break is over. We are now in for a long season ahead without the distraction of the bothersome international friendlies. The league has now taken shape and we are beginning to see a shuffling between the top 5 teams at the top of the table: Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

The table shows a gulf between the top 5 and the others. That is because they have been playing better than the rest of the lot. Chelsea are on top courtesy of their 6-match unbeaten streak. Liverpool just behind the Blues as they drew their match against Southampton. Manchester City always in the mix with a win over Crystal Palace. Arsenal snatched a last minute goal to draw at Manchester United. Spurs clinched a dramatic winner which saved them from getting left behind.

The Premier League now boasts of the best managers in the game. If we see the table, all the top teams have the best of managers which football has to offer. Be it Antonio Conte's 3-4-3. Pep Guardiola's possession football, Mauricio Pochettino's rejuvenated and youthful attacking display and Jurgen Klopp being...Klopp!

Each team has their own philosophy on which they are banking upon to carry them towards their aspired goal. But regardless of philosophies, one pivotal thing which is needed is consistency. The Premier league is the worst league for a manager to go on a long run of wins. If we look at past year's Bundesliga, Bayern Munich went on double digit winning runs while the French Ligue anyway looks like a one team league with PSG hardly getting any competition.

The Premier league is the toughest out of the lot because any team can be vulnerable and can be beaten on any day. Pep Guardiola started the season in an enigmatic fashion with City where everybody expected them to run away with the league. Suddenly they endured defeats and draws in between and now find themselves chasing.

Chelsea, who were not the bookmakers favourite lost to big teams like Arsenal and Liverpool which signalled tension. They now sit at the top and are looking like the most balanced team in terms of attacking and defensive capabilities.

Liverpool is the surprise package. Jurgen Klopp has finally been able to emulate his own personality into the team he is managing. They are fiery, hungry, enthusiastic and now have a character and identity which they lost in the past years.

Arsenal will always be in the mix thanks to Arsene Wenger's experience.

We have no doubt over the quality of the teams in contention here. But what every team needs is what Chelsea have at the moment. A winning run. The smaller teams (no offence intended) here, play a massive role. Like Middlesborough who held Manchester City to a draw, cost the Citizens 2 points which resulted in them being dethroned as the league leaders.

None of the top teams should take the smaller ones for granted. When the league intensifies, even a draw at an away fixture at Stoke can be crucial in winning the league. None of the top 4 teams except Chelsea have been consistent enough as of this moment. All of them are playing good football no doubt, but they are lacking a finishing touch which is causing a major hindrance in their way towards mounting a title challenge.

Although as a Chelsea fan I am happy that we are top of the table and we have the momentum in our favour, I do understand the fact that the table will keep on changing throughout the season. Our direct challengers will also go on a winning run we may have to chase them at one point in the season. But, what lies at the heart of it all is consistency. If Chelsea or any other team can maintain it, then they will have the biggest claim to the trophy.
