Will Barca sign a right back from the Premier League?

With the recent speculation across the last few weeks of Barcelona moving in for various Premier League right backs (or right wing backs) in January, it will be interesting to see who makes the move to the Nou Camp (if any at all).

Since, Dani Alves’ departure to Juventus in the summer, the right back position has been a problematic position for the Catalan side. £15m man, Aleix Vidal was initially signed in from Sevilla in the summer to replace Alves but more recently Barca boss, Luis Enrique has converted Sergi Roberto from centre midfield to fill what he sees as a void within his Barca side. The ever versatile Javier Mascherano is also seen as a right back option however reports have suggested Enrique is ready to make a move for a right back in January – potentially from the Premier League.

The first (and  craziest) rumour that arose from this subject was a potential move for Stoke City’s Glen Johnson. The 32 year old has made 5 Premier League appearances this season but has never played outside the Premier League – Johnson however does have 51 England caps and was called up to Gareth Southgate’s first England squad in October.

Johnson replaced an injured Nathaniel Clyne in those squads and he was the next Premier League right back to be linked with the Spanish giants. The ever reliable Liverpool man is seen to be a tangible option at the age of 25 but his loss would be a massive blow to the title challenge expected to be deployed by Jurgan Klopp and Liverpool this season. Klopp himself quashed the rumours with the disbelief it was being discussed so early in the season, he said; ‘how many matches have we played? Nine, ten? ****ing hell, nine matches and we talk about all this stuff.’ Before adding; ‘Do they want to get them in winter or the next window? Do they think they can buy Clyney in winter? Come on. It’s nice but not important.’

Hector Bellerin in the last week quashed the rumours of a return to Barcelona by signing a new ‘long term’ contract at Arsenal. This would have been a blow for Barca  who saw Bellerin as there number one January transfer target after vice-president, Jordi Mestre described Bellerin as ‘a great player, there’s no doubt about that.’ However, Bellerin put the rumours to bed himself by putting pen to paper on a new deal which reportedly earns him over £100,000 a week.

Bellerin’s rebuffing of Barca’s advances has seemed to open a door to the Nou Camp for Victor Moses. Though not a natural right back, Moses as impressed a wing back in the 3-5-2 formation deployed by Antonio Conte’s Chelsea this season after finally securing his place with the London outfit following a series of loan deals. Conte was quick to bring Moses back down to earth after telling the Nigerian to ‘focus on the present’. However, Moses’ match winning goal and sensational performance in his most recent game against Tottenham Hotspur would have done little to stop these rumours.

With these four players providing the prominent rumours from the Premier League, reports also suggest that Antonio Valencia and Bacary Sagna are stop gap targets for Barcelona – however these seem unlikely to materialise.
