Chelsea hold Liverpool at Anfield to go nine points clear

Diego Costa missed a penalty as Liverpool fought back from a goal behind to earn a draw at Anfield as Chelsea go nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.

David Luiz put the league leaders in front with a crisply struck free kick from 25 yards which bounced off the post and nestled into the net beyond the flat-footed Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool started the second half with pace and attacking intent, and were rewarded in the 58th minute when Wijnaldum headed in the equaliser following neat build up play from James Milner.

Chelsea seemed happy with the draw but could have come away with all three points when Diego Costa was brought down clumsily in the box by Joel Matip. The Spaniard got to his feet and fired the penalty towards the bottom corner only for Mignolet to spring down to his right and powerfully push the ball around the post.

Roberto Firmino had a late header saved but the result keeps Liverpool ten points behind the Blues who return to London with a well-deserved point.

Liverpool made a bright start to the game and their high pressure pinned Chelsea back in their own half for the opening stage of the game. The pressure nearly paid off when Wijnaldum had a 20-yard effort palmed away by Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea worked themselves back into the game and the trickery of Belgian Eden Hazard won a free kick 25 yards out following Lallana’s clumsy challenge.

Willian placed the ball down and seemed to be delivering the set piece, only for David Luiz to burst forward and strike a thunderous right footed effort off the left-hand post and into the net beyond the rooted Mignolet to become only the seventh player in Premier League history to score a direct free kick against Liverpool at Anfield.

Liverpool emerged from the break on the front foot, with Roberto Firmino blazing over the bar from 10 yards. Chelsea almost doubled the lead a few minutes later as a weak challenge from Milner sent Moses away down the right-hand edge of the box and his strike from a tight angle cannoned off the outside of the post and out for a goal kick.

Chelsea’s resistance was finally broken when a beautifully chipped ball from Henderson found Milner free at the back post. The makeshift left back headed the ball back across goal onto the head of the onrushing Wijnaldum who headed past Courtois from six yards as Anfield erupted.

Liverpool pushed for a winner, but it was Chelsea who broke down the other end with Diego Costa who cut inside and was brought down inside the 18-yard box by the dangling foot of Joel Matip to concede a penalty in the 77th minute.

Costa stepped up and fired towards the bottom left hand corner but Mignolet got down brilliantly to palm the ball away beyond the post.

Chelsea had another chance as substitute Pedro arrowed a shot just wide of the post. Liverpool will be disappointed with the result with Chelsea happier of the two sides, evident in Antonio Conte's celebrations with the away fans at the end of the game.

    Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet said:

“The feeling is we’re disappointed not to take three points. I think we deserved three points.”

    Chelsea goalscorer David Luiz commented:

“It is never easy to play here at Anfield and win points. We’re unlucky we didn’t win it. But it was a good result.”
