    Southampton 1 - 0 Liverpool

Southampton took one step into the EFL cup final with a deserved win over a poor Liverpool side at St Mary's, courtesy of Nathan Redmond's first half goal.

The first leg was off to a slow start, with Roberto Firmino's volley forcing a good reaction save from Fraser Forster, in what was Liverpool's only major chance in the opening half. Loris Karius had the spotlight on him after being recalled, and excellently denied Redmond an opener with an excellent save to prevent the England youngster from tucking one into the far corner.

However it was second time lucky for the superb Redmond, as Ragnar Klavan's clumsy clearance fell for Redmond, who tucked past Karius to give the Saints the lead, and he could have doubled after a pull back from close range but was denied after a stunning save from Karius.

After the break the hosts continued their stubborn defensive display, as despite Jurgen Klopp bringing on the returning Phillepe Countinho and Divock Origi, they failed to really test goalkeeper Fraser Forster on a bitterly frustrating night for the visitors.

Southampton could even have added to their advantage, as right back Cedric wasted a glorious chance after a swift counter attack, as instead of squaring to Jay Rodriguez who was in prime position for a tap in, he chose to go for goal for himself and only hit the side netting. He also hit the bar with a cheeky chip on a night where he could have taken the match ball home, such was the quality of the host's energetic and solid performance.

One consolation for Liverpool will be that they only trail by one goal going into the second leg at Anfield in a fortnight, but know they will have to produce a far better display to overcome Claude Puel's side and reach a second consecutive EFL cup final.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Nathan Redmond (Southampton)
A well taken goal, his first in 16 games and was a constant threat all evening. He also was a rock defensively, tracking back and helping out his defence when Liverpool piled forward. Could have had a hat-trick and more had it not been for bad luck and a good performance from Liverpool keeper Loris Karius.

Southampton: Forester, Soares, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Clasie, (Hojbjerg 73) Romeu, Davis (Ward-Prowse 82) Redmond, Rodriguez

Liverpool: Karius, Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner, Wijnaldum (Coutinho 61), Lucas, Can, Lallana, Sturridge, Firmino (Origi 83)
