United close in on top four after thrashing Champions Leicester

Manchester United hammered Champions Leicester to move two points off the top four after goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juan Mata sealed a comfortable win at the King Power Stadium.

Two goals in 88 first half seconds helped United cruise to a comfortable away victory.  Mkhitaryan opened the scoring in the 42nd minute through a powerful run through the heart of the Leicester defence and he finished expertly across Kasper Schmeichel to give United a deserved lead.

Ibrahimovic added a second two minutes later, latching onto Valencia's drilled cross to drive home from 12 yards to take his tally to 15 goals in the Premier League this season.

All hopes of a Leicester comeback were quashed early in the second half as Mata finished off a flowing move to secure the three points for United.

The thrashing leaves Champions Leicester one point away from the relegation zone and manager Claudio Ranieri has reason to be concerned as his side have failed to win a Premier League game in 2017.

As for United, the win keeps them unbeaten in 15 league games and two points behind fourth placed Arsenal.

United started the game brightly, and had a few half chances through Englishman Marcus Rashford, who blazed one over the bar and had the other saved brilliantly by Schmeichel at his near post.

United eventually took the lead in the 42nd minute through a powerful drive from Armenian Mkhitarian. He latched onto a flicked header from Chris Smalling with a beautiful touch to get past the onrushing Robert Huth and clinically fired the ball into the back of the net beyond the sprawling Kasper Schmeichel.

Leicester's defence totally capitulated after the opener and conceded again two minutes later. Antonio Valencia's burst down the right wing got United up the pitch and then the Ecuadorian drilled the ball into the box. Ibrahimovic showed his experience and class by holding his run and then striking a controlled finish into the bottom corner from 12 yards to give United a commanding lead at the break.

United started the second half on the front foot and carved the Leicester defence open to add a third in the 49th minute. Fantastic build up play from goalscorers Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan resulted in the Armenian sliding Mata through on goal to coolly dispatch the ball beyond Schmeichel.

United could have added a fourth late on through Mkhitaryan, but his effort sailed over the bar. Leicester hardly caused David De Gea any problems throughout the game as United return to Manchester with a well deserved three points.

Goal scorer Juan Mata commented after the game: "The first goal was an incredible goal and after that we played very good. We are happy today because we took the chances."

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel: "It is not a comfortable situation. It has been terrible and embarrassing. We need to stand up and be counted or else we will be relegated."

United face Watford at Old Trafford next Saturday whilst Leicester's next league game is a massive relegation battle away against Swansea.
