David Moyes Confirmed as Sunderland Manager for 2017/18 Season

In today’s press conference, David Moyes has confirmed that he will be managing Sunderland AFC next season. After talks with chairman Ellis Short and chief executive Martin Bain, he has revealed that the board believe he is the best man to bring Sunderland back into the Premier League after being relegated to the Championship last week.

Speaking to the press, Moyes said “I’ve got a four-year contract and I’ll be Sunderland manager next season. I know what needs to be done to get back in the Premier League and I know what the requirements are to do that […] I met with Martin and Ellis this week and we had initial discussions about how we move forward. We will meet again in a few weeks.”

There is no doubt that Sunderland’s relegation has been long in the making with miracle survivals pushes in recent seasons. Unfortunately for followers of the Black Cats, they have failed to generate an end of season resurgence enjoyed in previous seasons.

One of Moyes’ biggest tests will be his ability to keep hold of Jordan Pickford and Jermain Defoe. This looks like a difficult task for the Scot as he has revealed Defoe could leave due to a ‘clause in his contract’. While Pickford may prove loyal to the club where he was an academy player, he has made his desires to maintain Premier League prestige clear. With an impressive season and much more potential still to be realised, there will be no shortage of Premier League clubs looking to acquire his services.

After being relegated for the first time since 2006, the question is whether they can replicate their North East rivals, and achieve promotion in their first attempt.
