George's Fantasy Football Tips: Week 18

It’s nearly Christmas… hopefully one of these predictions happens and anyone who actually listens to me for some reason gets an early present!

    Bournemouth vs. Liverpool

The last time these two played each other at the Goldsands, seven goals were scored in what was one of the most entertaining games in recent memory. Something similar could definitely happen again given the tendency for both teams to have a go at the opposition with high pressing. Liverpool are a bit of a wounded animal following disappointing draws to at home to Everton and West Brom over the week and questions have been raised of Jurgen Klopp’s selection decisions. However, in a similar fashion to Arsenal, Liverpool are probably at their most dangerous when questions are asked of them after poor performances. Pack some Liverpool forwards into your team if you can, I doubt Roberto Firmino and Phillipe Coutinho will be benched this weekend.

Liverpool’s infamous issue, though, is not their attack. With several notable absentees, the backline is particularly vulnerable, and Bournemouth will be looking to pounce on any mistakes. The cherries have a full front line to choose from of capable finishers, whether that includes Jermain Defoe, Josh King, Callum Wilson (pictured above) or even Benik Afobe. They all possess incredible pace over ten yards and are hungry to get the goals flowing this season. They also aren’t too expensive… with Callum Wilson in particular only setting you back £5.8. Bournemouth haven’t won since a 4-0 win over Huddersfield a month ago, so a victory here is essential for them to pull away from a relegation battle. Expect them to go for it and pressurise a shaky Liverpool rear-guard.

A must win game for both for different reasons… this could be the tie of the weekend.

    Everton vs. Swansea

Everton have improved hugely under Sam Allardyce but it’ll be interesting to see what happens when they can’t sit tight at the back before countering like they have done so effectively against Liverpool and Newcastle. Wayne Rooney has hit a purple patch recently with five in four games and will likely be at Everton’s creative centre once again. But two players whose improvements have gone under the radar are Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jonjoe Kenny (pictured above). Sigurdsson is Everton’s highest points earning midfielder by some distance this season and, against his former club, will be up for this one. Jonjoe Kenny is a bit of a hidden gem on fantasy league- costing only £4.3 while, until Seamus Coleman’s return, playing regularly. He’ll be allowed space to attack down the flank given Everton’s back three system- especially if Swansea sit back. He could be good for a clean sheet or even, if given enough space, an assist or two.

For Swansea, their main hope will likely come from exposing Everton’s flanks if the wing backs get caught going forward. Nathan Dyer and Roque Mesa are most likely to provide this width and, should they get in behind, could pose a problem for Everton’s makeshift backline. One positive for Swansea at the moment is the fact that Wilfried Bony has hit a bit of form, scoring two in his last three games. With Everton’s recent backline containing the capable but still inexperienced Jonjoe Kenny and Mason Holgate, the ageing Ashley Williams and the inconsistent Cuco Martina, Bony has a chance to stamp his authority on the game… whether he does or not is another question. Him and his striker partner Tammy Abraham, who could benefit from Bony’s hold up play, are both priced under £6.0 so could be worth the risk.

Swansea are desperate for a win and, should they be on the end of a hammering, could be looking for a new manager next week. They need to go for it.

    Happy fantasy leagueing!
